St. George’s Day and Shakespeare’s 461st Birthday Celebrated with Classical Music in Ankara
Ankara marked St. George’s Day, the United Kingdom’s national day, along with the 461st birthday of William Shakespeare, through a special classical music concert. British Ambassador to Türkiye, Jill Morris, hosted the evening at the British Embassy residence. Diplomats, business people, and figures from the arts and culture world joined the event.
The Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory Orchestra performed under the baton of renowned British conductor James Ross. The concert featured classical compositions inspired by Shakespeare’s works. Professional actors from Hacettepe University’s theatre department brought Shakespeare’s words to life with readings in both English and Turkish.
A Lasting Source of Inspiration

British Ambassador Jill Morris underlined Shakespeare’s enduring impact on art and culture. She pointed out that cultural activities make important contributions to social life and economic development. In her remarks, Ambassador Morris said:
“Tonight, we celebrate not only the 461st birthday of William Shakespeare but also the deep and powerful cultural ties between the United Kingdom and Türkiye. Shakespeare, who inspired James’s program this evening, has captured the imagination of audiences for centuries.
People often overlook culture’s true value in shaping societies, influencing lifestyles, and driving economies. Yet its impact is undeniable. Music plays a key role. Creative arts matter deeply to our national economies.
The UK’s rich and diverse cultural landscape allows us to share the best of British tradition in every event we host. Tonight, Shakespeare’s legacy and the brilliant music we’ve experienced come together with the modern, dynamic spirit of Britain.”
