Italian Embassy in Ankara hosted the “Design for a Better Life” exhibition and the Sustain-IT Conference as part of the “Italian Design Week.”
The event opened with a speech by the Italian Ambassador to Türkiye, Giorgio Marrapodi. Mozaik Design Founder Yaman Ertürk and renowned Italian designer Alex Terzariol also shared their experiences with the attendees.
SOLUTIONS FOR REAL NEEDS
Ambassador Marrapodi emphasized that Italian design is not just an economic sector but also closely linked to culture, innovation, and lifestyle. “At the heart of design is the human being. Italian design does not only create aesthetically beautiful objects but also offers solutions tailored to real human needs. This is one of the core principles of Italy’s design philosophy,” he said.

He also highlighted that Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, places great importance on promoting Italian design globally. “Italian embassies around the world are celebrating Italian Design Day. This year’s theme is ‘Design for a Better Life Against Inequalities.’ Beauty, functionality, and innovation should serve social progress and genuinely improve people’s lives,” he stated.
CONTINUING THE CREATIVE DIALOGUE
Marrapodi noted that Italy’s design sector employs 64,000 people worldwide and generates approximately €5 billion in annual revenue. “Italian design is one of the most important ambassadors of the ‘Made in Italy’ spirit. To sustain this tradition, we continue fostering collaboration and creative dialogue. Türkiye and Italy, both with strong industrial and creative traditions, are increasingly exchanging projects and ideas,” he said.
TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP MEETS INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION
Speaking at the event, Yaman Ertürk shared his first encounter with modern Italian design at the ICFF Design Fair in New York in 1987. “Since then, I have gained extensive experience in this field. Italian design has undergone a major transformation by combining traditional craftsmanship with industrial production. Even today, the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award remains a key symbol of this unique design heritage,” he explained.

IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE
Italian designer Alex Terzariol highlighted how design serves as a bridge between different cultures. “The purpose of design is to enhance people’s quality of life. Elements such as materials, ergonomics, and aesthetics form the foundation of good design,” he said.

As part of the event, works by renowned Italian designers were also exhibited.
