The United Arab Emirates (UAE), often synonymous with Dubai, has undergone a miraculous transformation since gaining independence in 1971. Today, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the capital, serve as symbols of the evolution of this small nation composed of seven emirates. Located in the southeastern Arabian Peninsula, the UAE has adopted the philosophy of being a land of “the most” in every respect. It boasts the world’s tallest building, the most modern and expansive shopping malls, the widest roads, and much more.

To many, Dubai might seem like an artificial city dominated by skyscrapers. As someone who had never visited the UAE before, I must admit I shared this perception. However, my preconceptions about Dubai were shattered during a five-day trip organized by the UAE Embassy in Ankara. This trip, which included both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, offered me diverse experiences ranging from iconic landmarks and traditional culture to the media industry and modern entertainment.
A RACE FOR HEIGHTS
On the first day of our trip, we visited Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. This 828-meter-tall architectural marvel has become a symbol of Dubai. Its iconic structure is visible from nearly every corner of the city. Standing on the 124th-floor observation deck and taking in the breathtaking view of the city is an unforgettable experience. Burj Khalifa’s towering presence is a testament to the revolutionary transformation of Dubai. Although it currently holds the title of the world’s tallest building, a taller skyscraper under construction in Riyadh is set to claim that record. Nevertheless, the UAE is already preparing a response with a new 1,200-meter-high tower. How far this race for the tallest building will go remains to be seen.
A HUB OF LUXURY
Beneath Burj Khalifa lies the Dubai Mall, which holds the distinction of being the world’s largest shopping center. With over 1,200 stores, it’s easy to lose yourself here. Housing high-end brands, luxurious restaurants, a massive aquarium, and even an ice rink, Dubai Mall caters to every aspect of modern life. One full day is needed to explore Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall together. In the evening, the dazzling light show at Burj Khalifa creates a fairytale-like atmosphere, while the fountain light and water show in the central plaza symbolizes the city’s technological and artistic advancements.
A MEDIA HUB
Dubai’s urban planning is characterized by the clustering of institutions within the same area. One such example is Dubai Media City, which hosts the offices of major global media organizations. With international media companies and broadcasting firms, Dubai has established itself as a global information hub. During our visit to Media City, we toured the studios of NBC and CNN, gaining fascinating insights into the workings of the news broadcasting world. This experience offered me a fresh perspective on the future of the media industry in a rapidly digitizing world, where the growth of media platforms aligns seamlessly with Dubai’s vision.
A MESMERIZING LIGHT SHOW
One of the most enjoyable activities in Dubai is taking a boat tour at Dubai Marina. Surrounded by towering skyscrapers, this area represents the elegance of modern urban living. The luxury yachts and waterfront restaurants at Dubai Marina offer a completely different view of the city. As the night progresses, the marina’s illuminated skyline is complemented by mesmerizing drone light shows.
AN ENGINEERING MARVEL
Dubai is home to numerous iconic landmarks, one of which is the Palm Jumeirah, a feat of engineering that has been featured in many documentaries. This man-made island, shaped like a palm tree, stands as a symbol of Dubai’s engineering ingenuity. Walking through this magnificent island, where every detail of the landscape and luxurious hotels feels like a work of art, is a truly remarkable experience.
A GATEWAY TO THE FUTURE
Dubai is a city that has carved a unique niche on the global stage with its innovative architecture and forward-looking vision. One of the most striking symbols of this vision is the Museum of the Future. This elegant and modern structure in the heart of the city captivates visitors not only with its design but also with the ideas it presents. A trip to Dubai is incomplete without a desert safari. During our adventure across the golden sands, the thrill of racing over dunes in a 4×4 vehicle brought our adrenaline to its peak. Desert safaris are best experienced in the afternoon, allowing visitors to witness the mesmerizing sunset and later enjoy the evening entertainment at camps in the desert. One tip: avoid going on a safari with a very full stomach!
TRADITIONAL LIFESTYLE
After our Dubai adventure, we headed to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE. Unlike Dubai’s modern skyline, Abu Dhabi retains a more traditional character, though it too has experienced significant development. One of our stops was the, a historic fort that sheds light on the UAE’s past and showcases the nation’s cultural heritage. Abu Dhabi offers a glimpse of how traditional Arab lifestyles blend with modernity.
ELEGANCE IN EVERY DETAIL
One must-visit landmark in Abu Dhabi is the Grand Mosque, one of the largest in the world. This magnificent mosque exudes grace and grandeur in every detail. More than a place of worship, the Grand Mosque stands as a masterpiece of architecture and art. Its towering minarets and stunning chandeliers exemplify the pinnacle of Arab culture. Inside, every corner reveals traces of artistic craftsmanship.
FROM PAST TO FUTURE
The UAE has successfully transitioned from a traditional lifestyle to a modern way of living in a remarkably short period. The grandeur of Dubai’s structures, the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi, and the unique experiences offered by both cities showcase the UAE’s global influence.
