Day of German Unity Celebrated

The Day of German Unity is Germany’s national holiday. It commemorates the German reunification in 1990 and is celebrated with a reception hosted by the German Ambassador Martin Erdmann and his wife Marion Erdmann.

The historical event of German reunification, where the former GDR officially joined the Federal Republic of Germany,  celebrated with a big reception at the German Embassy premises in Ankara.

Among those attending were the Mustafa Varank, Minister of Industry and Technology, Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş, Çankaya Mayor Alper Taşdelen, many ambassadors, foreign mission representatives, and guests. The embassy premises decorated with yellow, red and black balloons, the colors of the German flag.

The reception began with the Turkish and German national anthems. In his speech after the national anthems, Minister Mustafa Varank pointed out that Germany has such a special place among Turkey’s friends. Speaking after Varank, German Ambassador Martin Erdmann stressed that they are celebrating the day of Europe’s division has overcome. After the speeches, Marion Erdmann sang the song ‘Friendship‘ in Turkish.

Historical Significance of the Day of Germany Unity

The fall of the Berlin Wall on the 9th of November in 1989 marked the end of the Cold War and had paved the way for German reunification almost a year after. The Unification Treaty that was signed on the 20th of September in 1990, sealed the end of the division of Germany.

Live Music and an 80s Party

The evening continued with live music. On the main stage, a colorful mixture of pop and rock from 80s and 90s performed by The Germany Army Band during the event.
